1. It doesn’t look like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train will be making any stops soon, as it was announced today that the anime film sequel to the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime has exceeded 20.4 billion yen (US$197.9 million) at the Japanese box office, surpassing Howl’s Moving Castle to become the 3rd highest-grossing anime film at the Japanese box office in just 24 days. Demon Slayer is only the 6th film to ever pass 20 billion yen in Japan.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train continues to break records, now being the fastest film to gross over 20 billion yen at the Japanese box office, doing so in more than half the time of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, which took 61 days to reach the milestone compared to 24 for Mugen Train. Kimetsu no Yaiba  film also sold 15,373,943 tickets in Japan in just 24 days, again doing so in more than half the time of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, who sold 15 million tickets in 60 days.

Bringing in 20,483,611,650 yen (US$197.9 million) at the Japanese box office, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has overtaken Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to become the 5th highest-grossing film in the region. On the anime side, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is now the 3rd highest-grossing anime film in the region after surpassing Howl’s Moving Castle. When combining both charts, Mugen Train is only now below Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name, which grossed 25.03 billion yen (US$242 million) over its long theatrical run in Japan.

Worldwide, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train is currently the 9th highest-grossing film of 2020, just a little bit below DC’s Birds of Prey film at US$201,858,461. Depending on how the worldwide box office goes over the next week, we may see the Japanese film overtake DC’s Birds of Prey. It will be duking it out with Chinese animated film Jiang Ziya: Legend of Deification for the highest-grossing animated film of 2020 after all the US animated films have either been postponed or sent straight to VOD because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the worldwide highest-grossing anime film chart, Demon Slayer has overtaken Stand by Me Doraemon and Weathering with You to become the 5th biggest anime film of all time worldwide. The anime film is now opening around South-East Asian countries and their box office gross will soon be added to the already gargantuan box office gross from Japan.
